High-End Diamond Merchant, Toronto

This project for a very high-end diamond merchant was inspired by the dramatic contrast between the darkness of carbon and the brilliance of diamonds.

“I wanted to dramatize the experience

of buying a high-end diamond from

the moment a customer walked in the door.”

The shape of a diamond is integrated into the architecture of this contemporary design.

Key points:

  • Customers could only access the store with an appointment.
  • Each employee had his or her own office and the furniture needed to be able to adapt to their needs.
  • The entrance needed two security doors and a window where an admin could talk to customers before they enter.
  • The reception area may hold small parties and events. The furniture in this area also included storage for common documentation.
  • Windows needed security bars, and all walls were lined with metal.
  • The manager’s office was connected to a living room space and a bedroom in case he was visited by overseas clientele.

“I wanted to dramatize the experience of buying a high-end diamond from the moment a customer walked in the door.”

  • The main entrance doors were designed and manufactured with intricate carving and metalwork to create the feeling of a ‘spiritual’ place.
  • The doors were designed to be bigger than normal doors, and each held mythological symbols (such as Cupid shooting a diamond arrow)
  • The waiting space was designed with a special light and with a golden wall to reflect light in all directions, to give the impression that the entrance was an almost ‘spiritual’ or ‘blessed’ space.
  • The security bars for the windows were placed diagonally in the direction of the sunlight to allow more light into the rooms and were built with wood to soften the look of the steel bars.
  • Custom furniture design. From these designs, I developed 2 new office furniture collections: GEO Collection and NEO Collection. I also designed a new masculine home furniture collection called Toronto Night.
